There's not very much going on in the patch right now, but I love my wind protection, which looks particularly nice this year, so, I will tell you about it today. As my patch is located in a valley surrounded by some rather bare hills, cold air comes flowing down the valley at night, and my patch is located at a rather exposed site. Therefore, I've found frost damage in early June in some years, and this year there was some frost damage as early as around August 24th. So, the wind protection is not meant to save the plants from stron gusts, it is meant to pose a hindrance to the cold air flow near the ground. Therefore, I had sown rye and vetch last fall (along the fence around the patch), and that green/purple protector was up in May and early June (when I needed it), cf. pic A, June 11th. Around mid June I chopped it down and (instead of corn, which I used to sow in past years) I planted Zinnias, Tagetes 'Single Gold', and put some corn and sunflower seeds into the ground as well (cf. pics B', B'' from July 1st). Now, the time has come that there's risk of frosty airflow again, but thanks to the flowery fence around my patch (pic C, taken yesterday) the frosty air flow gets disturbed about 5 ft before the patch.
