DRAT! My first indoor growing experiment was a total failure. The goal was to see if the plants benefitted from a nightly rest period or if 24/7 light was just better. Results were inconclusive because the plants in both tents look like hell.
Here were the conditions that produced such lousy results:
Substrate: 50% miracle grow potting mix and 50% coco coir (potting mix may have been too hot or coir had some salts in it?)
Lighting: Approx. 350 PPFD (I think this was too high) on 24 hrs in Tent 1 and on 16 hrs in Tent 2 (Both look similarly bad)
Watering/Feeding: none other than initial substrate hydration. Soil stayed moist for full 12ish days it took to get to this point
Temp: ranging from 70-80 degrees F.
Welp, now I know what not to do. Onto the next attempt. And if that one goes poorly I'll do what we all do in a moment of desperation and bug Matt!

In a day or two I will start a new batch of seeds in this. This is a tweaked version of Dan Sutherland's seed starting mix.
Original Recipe:
- 3 Parts Peat Moss
- 3 Part Fine Perlite
- 2 Parts Coco Coir
- 0.5 Parts Worm Castings
- 0.25 Parts Kelp Meal
- A Healthy Serving of Myco innoculant
My Add-Ins:
- Some Calcium carbonate dissolved in water to maybe neutralize the peat (probably pointless)
- Yucca Extract to help with hydrophobicidity (50% sure thats a real word) and feed microbes
- ROOT microbe inocculant (I had an open bag of it and thought why not)

For Valentines day my girlfriend made me another pumpkin toons card. Any old-school growers know what the 723 was?

My homemade germination chamber. It is warmed by a mini heating mat in the bottom of the cooler and the seeds sit on the perforated cardboard shelf. There is a thermostat system that keeps the temp at 86 degrees F. It works well but I'm having issues with mold forming even when I soak in 1% peroxide. Thoughts?

A new batch of test seeds are potted up. These are in the Sutherland recipe seed starting mix and under an approx. PPFD of 250. I think this should work out better than the first run. They were hydrated with a light shower of humic/fulvic and seaweed.

I don't want to spread rumors but I heard that the first 50 people to register for the 150 square foot challenge this year who are 13-29 years old will have their entry fee waived and will be eligible for a bonus prize if they finish in the top 3 of the contest. In other news, I planted my practice seeds way too deep and they are only just breaching lol.
