The deer are nipping my plants , What will help keeping them away from the plants ?

Do you have any kind of barriers up? Maybe my deer are just real lazy, but they do not jump over the wind fencing which is just a 3ft erosion fence.

Of course once the first one is brave enough, then it will be a moot point because they will all join in.

Been dealing with their destruction for almost 20 years now when they moved in around our farm. Have tried basically everything including culling them out (deer donated to a food bank by the way) to no success. Only others move in plagued with them unfortunately. Only a good strong high electric fence will work. You can see some set ups in growers' diaries as examples. It's a good investment and you will sleep better at nights because if not, they'll just get worse more plant damage then the pumpkins. Good luck

Paul once the deer find out its good eating you're screwed. I lost over 3000 lbs of AGs and FPs and all my veggies to them last year. Cayenne pepper spray will work..you can make your own and spray it on. I will also put mint oil, Irish Spring soap dissolved and vinegar in it. Bad point being you need to spray constantly. Rain washes it off and you need to keep up with new growth. Was going to raise my fences to 7' this year but the body said no. Commercial deer fencing is made 12' tall. I had little problem with them for years with 4-5' fencing until they got a taste of the buds and kins. Feed them lead. Good Luck!! T

Paul I just took a look at your diary and see no fencing...really expensive when all is said and done. Plus I wouldn't want to be in wet areas when electric was on...another small fortune...believe you also have several patches. Mister/sprayer with repellant mix should work..mist new growth and also the perimeter of the patch/woodline and around ground in front of new growth. They really hate some smells.

Are they like rabbits, do they get fearful around blood smells? Bloodmeal maybe... Lots of nitrogen in that stuff. Or maybe they would just eat it up, idk. A dog that enjoys chasing them will definitely work, at least until they all run across a busy road and get hit by traffic.

Friend of mine probably still has a motion-activated sprinkler that did not distinguish my open car window from a deer and got me numerous times over the years - it was near some special flowers, not near AGs, but it'd surely deter ME from getting too close. Disguising the area, BEING OUT THERE once in a while and I would not be surprised if they detest human urine, also are passing ideas - I know I'd hate it! Just like anything else, if nothing happens, complacency will follow. Maybe EACH thing ever mentioned in slow succession is the weigh to go, like fungicide...eg

I put up an electric fence, just two strands. Apparently there are other things for them to eat around here so pumpkins aren't worth the hassle of getting zapped.

I put up a lifesize coyote decoy and move it around every couple days. It keeps rabbits, ground hogs, deer etc... away from my garden.

I've been told sprinkling Milorganite all on top of the area works. I can't attest to that. Fencing and I use Deer Scram in my gardens with excellent success.
