I have a very nice flag plant going. I have 1 5 lobe that's nice and round about 6 feet out on the first secondary vine. Another is a 4 lobe that's narrow in the front and larger on the blossom end at around 12 to 14 feet out on the main. Should I opt for the 4 or 5 lobe?

100% main vine. The one on the secondary isn't an ideal secondary either. You typically want more plant behind the pkn, and the first secondary doesn't give much.
Be sure to make sure the chosen one took before cutting anything.

Thanks for that. It's kinda hard cutting off 50pounders. I'll put all my eggs in the basket now and leave the one on the main

It sounds like the one on the first secondary is better pollinated? I wouldnt be afraid of that, they can sometimes grow good in weird locations on the plant. Pics would help.

My first one over 1000 lbs. was on the first secondary but of course it is preferable to set one on the main if possible.

After measuring today the one on the main had 2 inches on the other one. Went ahead and cut off the one on the secondary.fingers crossed. Haven't been able to get a fruit set on a vine until the second week of July for a few years. Any ideas out there to help me get an earlier set with the area I'm in? Templeton CA

It seems that a larger plant ASAP will be more able and will be 'secure' enough in its environment to support the mid to final phases of its growth and purpose of providing a Giant upon it. Hence, look into how to get a bigger plant sooner by the time you are going to grow any next year. There are many regimens of fertilizers and techniques amongst all growers of AGs that simply need to all end the same way. If and now that your fruit is the one and only, take care to not think 'bigger, faster', but 'make 'er a laster', lol--- NO major moves of the pumpkin to position it better unless it is over several days' time and Good Luck otherwise with any other advice. eg
