does anyone use coal ash we use it in potting media and i use it in the patch improves drainage and airation good in vegetable garden as well cheap alternative to perlite

Hi dale are you talking about coals from a wood fire? or actual ash from coal dug from the ground?

Was wondering the same thing? I know a few growers ( depending on your soil ) that use wood fire coal ash and do very well.

Full of Potassium, Phosphorus and many other nutrients and great for neutralizing your soil. Again though, know your patch and if I was going to as this I would do it sometime in the fall.

You're a great grower Dale so I'm sure you know the numbers of your soil.;)

Its always fun as we all start growing on the top of the world, you guys are preparing down under.:)

CHeck on the Ph.... I have been straining the burnt but not ash wood chunks from my fireplace. Sifting out the ash as I dont need the added akalinity, but use the bio-char hunks tossing them all over the garden. Just a thought

its coal ash from power stations ranges from fines to coarse chunky pieces very sterile looks a bit like dried out coral plant seem to like it great in potting media its one of the cheapest ingredients i have been adding it to my patch for years crowning the patch for drainage as well as sand

As far as I know with the coal we burn in this country we are told to stay away from using it in our gardens because it may contain toxins, like certain metals etc. But I just did a quick search online and see that people do use it like you..... I guess it just depends on the source of the coal.

google has quite a bit on it i remember lots of the info i found came from united states have a look in a landscape yard or ask at a place that makes soil mixes for nurseries we mix it at 20 percent in avocado mix i am going to put some perlite in the patch where i start the plant but mostly coal ash will try to take a close up pic of it aand put on diary over weekend
