You can grow any "3" of these - which 3 for you?

1904 Sperry = 1885 x 2520
2554 Andrusz = 2365 x 1885
2493 Wolf = 2365 x self
1805 Scott = 2294 x 2365
2425 Daletas = 1885 x 2469
2342 Stelts = 1953 x 1885

Right now:
I'm still not sure why I would or would not go with a sib cross otherwise I'd put the 2365 x sib in there.

I meant the 2493 + 2365 x self

So: I'm a little hazy on sib and self crosses, i.e. the whys and why nots.

I like the idea of adding some more heavy into the 1885 but maybe the 1885 is the perfect seed already. Its difficult to really imagine improving upon something thats already so good.

Gritty there is no such thing as the perfect seed, the good seeds of today will be eclipsed by new seeds with proper breeding

I think we havent fully seen what the 1885 is capable of yet but, yes, the effort to produce an even better seed has already begun...

The 2365 might be better than the 1885. It produced 3 of the top 5 pumpkins in its first year out. They weigh heavier to the chart than 1885s do.

I think the 2554 = 2365 x 1885 can't be bad. Time will tell. So far I've got 3 of the 4 in the list but I don't know if my wallet will hold up to the demand.

Truckin that doesn't necessarily mean crossing the 1885 back in is bad.

Tell you what. You pick the three best based on recommendations here and send me the rest. We'll do a comparison in October. LOL

Since Cancersurvivor through the 2907 in the mix I have to ask this question. The same question could be asked about the 2520:

If a pumpkin grows big as did the 2907 and 2520 but splits or fails in some structural way because it couldn't support or contain it's own weight doesn't that say something about it genetic viability.

Garwolf, the 1885 is probably prone to splitting because of how fast it grows, and a relative inability to support that growth. 2365 Seems to have thicker walls and better structure, thus less splits. Similarly, since the 2907 was crossed with the 2356 Mendi, which is a pretty sound fruit, I wouldn't be concerned. Moreover, the 2907 survived over 70 pounds a day for a long period, and only developed a pin hole at day 90 when it was slowly plodding along. If anything that's a testament to it's integrity within the subset of 1885 seeds. The Paton's other 1885 split, so it was likely less structurally sound

Chris - my original plan was to self it for a certain cross I had planned for next year.

My very close second option for pollination was the 2702, but that plant was such a weakling, that by pollination time I decided not to use that plant for any pollinations at all.
