Looks like you can grow something really big off a cutting! Cool project and good luck Doc

I want a piece of the patons 1885.If i get one it will prove how much I suck as a grower.Oh, and yes thats very interesting.Mark Sawtelle here in CO. has been saying you can grow big off a cutting/clone for 20 years.

Lol I was thinking the same thing, they should take cuttings, if only to grow them next year. The 1885 seems to be a cut above the rest, couple it with two great growers and you have something special.

How ironic, I was talking about the same thing with my dad a couple weeks ago!

I wish more people were taking clippings of big ones at the end of the year and cloning it. Joe got a clipping of the 1725 that grew the 2009 and we attempted a number of crosses with it the next year. If you could cross the Paton's 1885 into a bunch of plants next year, just think of that could push the hobby forward. I did that with a plant a number of years back. The greenhouse the clone was at had a powdery mildew and we lost the plant, but the process for the cloning wasn't overly difficult.

You can literally just pull the buried vine up and repot it, easiest way to go

Mark S. keeps the cutting alive all winter in his bay window. You just have to root a node once in awhile.I got a piece of Rons 2009 growing plant(1725 harp seed) from matt debacco. It had bad powdery mildew and was weak. I hit it hard with eagle 20(about three times) and the clone recovered.I grew a 200ish lb selfed fruit on it. That seed went into the world record squash through holub and cantrell breeding a squash pumpkin cross fruit for its seed.

I have been keeping an eye on Rodebaugh's giant off the cutting too. He has proven big ones can be grown off of one. If someone had access to a lab and had the "know how" I bet tissue culture could be even better, because you could scan the plant for any viruses or disease and make sure you start with something perfect. (Like they do with seed potatoes)

Its down right amazing. His clone is actually bigger than the original Pumpkin that the plant grew when it had a full stump. This has huge implications. In the past Cloning has been used just to pass on the genetics and get some seeds. However, If you can get a clone to grow as well as a plant from seed that means you don't have to try and hit the genetics lottery anymore. You can take a proven plant clone it over and over and theoretically grow an infinite amount of competition pumpkins on it.

@ bigmoon yes considering what folks cab afford to spend on seeds... a good clone seems like an even better way to spend $ to support a club.
