How careful do I have to be about keeping mud off the tip of my vines, the main one in particular?

Talking about mud caused by splash water (heavy rain on a muddy patch)?...I wouldn´t worry about that, the vine tip is pretty hairy, and as the mud dries and the vine and leaves stretch the dry and crumbly loam will just fall off. Usually, the vine tip is well protected by its hairy coat, so there shouldn´t any points of entry for nasty microbes. Don´t try to remove the dirt manually, that would cause tiny injuries.

If growing outdoors, sometimes it’s impossible to keep mud from splashing up during heavy rains. Like Pumpking said, don’t grab or pick at it, a tiny wound from your finger nail will be amplified 10 fold when every stretches out.

I do sometimes take a cup of water and pour over a mud coated vine tip. But generally, as it grows the mud sheds off.
