A semi-feral cat has decided to climb the 8 foot deer fences around my patch. I believe it is attracted to the fish fertilizer but so far no damage, just paw prints. (If I could I get it to wear patch shoes...) Any suggestions for how to discourage this animal from getting into the patch. As I believe it is sort of a pet for a neighbor, I'm not too interested in terminal solutions. Thanks.

If it's at all feral it will be wary of human contact. A scarecrow armed with a solar security light will work at night. Otherwise, if you can find a werewolf and chain it to a post in the middle of the patch that's worked for me in the past. ;)

Almost forgot to say, the werewolf thing only works one night a month. Probably not worth the trouble.

Worst case is they crap in the patch and steal your time from the pumpkins by making you pet them and give them attention.
Worth their weight in gold if they catch a mouse that was going to cause trouble.

I have a friend who lives on acreage and gets 'fixed' feral cats for rodent control. Just makes a donation to the non-profit that does the neuter/spay. They sometimes last months, sometimes years before the circle of life requires him to get more. Cat=Good. Rodents=Bad.

Perhaps an 'outgoing' addition to the fence is in order; I suppose a strutted, maybe even skinny board sticking OUTward at the top of each upward support with one width (2-4 feet) of deer screen (the black netting stuff) stretched loosely from point to point...if you see an easy opportunity, you go for it; if there's another obstacle at the top, maybe not. Thinking along the lines of squirrel deterrents, I am - eric g

If you can find a plastic decoy coyote, fox or canine of some sort and move it around every couple days it will stay away!

I don't bother chasing mice around I slink down the alleyway looking for a fight Howling to the moonlight on a hot summer night Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry "Wild stray cat, you're a real gone guy" I wish I could be as carefree and wild But I got cat class and I got cat style
