I'm all about doing new things and finding the best ways of doing even those; I had a nice rant all typed out and have to do it over, now, so this might not be as flowery as the original, lol; Long story now short (LSS) if you want to try to sprout seeds without any additional heat, plant them with the tips sticking OUT OF the SS Mix, per my attached Diary entries and methods; - I believe this allows the seed to get going before having to delve into and deal with whatever might be a problem for the radicle trying to do so an inch or more down under.
Adding heat with my Germ Fridge - (yup - an unused refrigerator with a thermostat and check THIS out >>> two LED standard white light bulbs on the lowest glass shelf - each uses like 14 watts and this does 88-93+ very well! I always use 2 in case one goes out(!) - is the very best way I've found for sprouting seeds; Protection from critters, well-regulated temps and lighting is there, space galore and someday, maybe I'll plug the thing IN and use it FOR refrigeration in my attached garage! Ahem... The Diary is all about AGAR, which is AWESOME, and you should try it! (view and read the entire diary); HOWEVER, starting them in SS Mix would be more commonplace and more of a test of the seeds' pathogenic (Damping off?) susceptibility. I'm sure I have done this with SS Mix but am surprised to not yet find any Diary of mine depicting so; I am sure it will work and will post pics of any results, of course. U, though? Why wait? Ha Ha - I'll be walking the walk, I'm sure, in a few days. Do both.

The reason I came up with 'Tips Up' is because I think that initially, seeds did NOT sprout because they were planted normally in the AGAR and may have been smothered by being so. Maybe. I'm relatively sure that this will work without covering the SS Mix, butt a soda cup with a cover is a GREAT way of doing this, and you paid for the cup, right? Saran Wrap is simply more-scientific, though.
Man, that original rant was SO good - I wish there were a multi-level clipboard on computers - beyond 'Control + Z'!
Either weigh, check it out, DO IT, experiment and have fun all around! eg
