I came home to find that all three of my seeds sprouted and popped through the soil. The problem is, two of the three plants lost of of the leaves. The one has completely fallen off, the other one is pure yellow. What happened? Should I scratch the two plants and start again??

What is your soil that you are planting in. What temp? How wet is your soil?

I used a miracle grow potting mix, kept the temps around 80 degrees and the soil was not wet, I watered the soil before I planted the seeds and watered again only when the soil started drying out. I am pretty sure I didnt over water...but I just have no clue what is going on...

I had problems with some tomato I put in buckets. The stems was thinning. I added something or combination of something and it was killing them. I took them and changed the soil, now there doing fine. Don't know if it is even similar. I would try again. If anything it would of stressed the plant?

Rkdarr, grab a handfull of yer Miracle grow potting mix, at it's wettest, and squeeze real hard...let us know how many drops of water come out!!! One is a lil too much? Also, Miracle grow potting mix, is prbly not the best to start AG seeds in...too much ferts!!! Should start in a seed starting mix!!! & would guess 85F would help? Cots being yellow, when they first come up is sorta normal, they need light to turn green!!! Photosenthesis, and awl...ya know!!! Peace, Wayne

Ok, I will try. It is just weird since the one is perfectly fine. I do not know what happened to the other. The cot of the other two are very yellow, and the one that is still on the plant is rock hard. The soil is not wet, not wet enough to squeeze any moisture out. They seem to be growing fine, since the one with the hard yellow leave grew about 1/2 inch since last night. So I guess the most important question would be, since they seem to still be growing...do I have to scrap them and restart? Would this be the best?

They will probably come out of it but I would stay away from Miracle Grow soil for starting seeds from now on. It's too dense and has too much juice in it for a germinating seed. They are probably just shocked from the fertilizer in the mix, but as long as they keep growing they should start to look better over the next few days.

Ok, I will use that soil for something else. I will keep an eye out on the plants to make sure they are still growing. As long as the plants can recover from the loss of one of the leaves...Thanks for all the info.

They will probably grow out of it, although it can never hurt to have a back up plan started just in case.

I used Miracle Grow potting mix this year, and my A.G. plants look fine early on. I pre-sprout my seeds.....maybe that makes a difference. Rkdarr, Are the cotyledons falling off, or the true-leaves?

I use miracle Grow potting mix and get 100% germination in my incubator.
jiffy seeds starting mix is a good brand and I use it for small seeded plants like herbs.

On the first plant, the one of the first leaves came off while it was poking through the soil. On the second plant, one of the first leaves is rock hard and bright yellow (but didnt fall off). Should I try to take this leaf off or just let it on for the ride? The third plant is perfectly fine and growing great. I just do not have a clue why the first two plants lost one of their leaves.
