How soon after the seedling appears do I need to place it under a grow light?

My seedling experiments have done best when I've placed them under the lamp within a day. Much longer than that in a windowsill & they've gotten very leggy. -Steve

Sambo:
As soon as the seedling appears get them under the lights not further than 4" that will give you a nice healthy plant try to keep the plant the same distance as it grows.

YEAH! I would say even more: place them under the light as soon as you could see a little of the seed crushing the surface. Once that, they don't need so much heat anymore, but they need to "feel" the light. The shorter the stem, the stronger it will be. Be aware of the leggy plants, too many dangers are waiting to attack them, and the worst of all: Murphy's Law.

4" below the lights burned the ends of my leaves on a test plant. I now find 8" to work fine.
