Just wondering whether to bury the whole sprouted seed below the soil - leaves and tap root, or to just bury the tap root and leave the white unopened seed leaves above soil level. I buried the whole thing and they all pushed their way up. Maybe just burying the root would cause the leaves to green up and open sooner, with a light source(grow light or sun)Will experiment with this idea.......Ben

I buried the whole thing about an inch under the soil. My thought was that I would treat it as a regular seed and allow it to emerge from the soil naturally.

I bury the seedling just like a normal seed. I dont think there is any advangtage to buring just the root tip. The potential for drying out is greater the closer you get to the top. That would be bad.

Planting depth is important to me. Never plant too shallow as the wind will catch the secondary leaves
and you risk stem breaks (also resemble the work of cut worms). I cut 2 liter bottles in collars and plant
the peat moss pot around it to:
1) keep the wind at bay
2) prevent cut worms from getting near the supporting stem

Pumpkins are NOT tomatoes however, I am careful not to plant them too deep. IF you leave the plants too long in peat moss pots or place in a sunny windwo they will reach for the sun and you will have a plant with a 6-8" stem. At this point I strongly consider not having these as keepers.

being that all of my plants were exactly as Gary(2)describes above, for anyone reading this way into next spring---keep the lights on your sprouts--don't rely on window-light because they grow the most(i think) at night
and 8-12 hours gives them a good chance to do so!

i planted every one (9 plants) just like normal, but in the soil at an
angle, so the extra length of the stems just laid along the ground.........perhaps a stake inserted on either side to prevent wind from shifting the floppy young plant, but otherwise you should have no trouble and you DON'T have to throw them out....hope this helps!
