Here in the northeast mother nature has not got us off to a very good start. Without sun and impractical to set in the ground due to recent weather plants have gotton a little "leggy". While I have found plenty of above ground info [site search], I have not found any below ground info. Any experience regarding leggy root systems that match the above ground growth?? TY Peter

my peat pots have a bit of plastic wrap loosely wrapped around them, which allows the roots that would otherwise become "root-bound" to be able to at least flourish without drying out....i cannot seem to put the plants into their planting holes without peeling away the peat pot (4") and
doing my best to drag the peat pot off of the roots without wrecking them, just before planting...seems to work okay. this is probably NOT the answer you are looking for, but others may find it useful....good luck.......eric

Thanx Eric. I have used newspaper to line the pots [2 gallon]. At transplanting time lift plant, roots, potting soil and all up and into prepared location by means of the newspaper. The dryer the soil the fewer sheets necessary.

The back-ups were very leggy with only 1 true leaf and very slow growth. I used the worse looking backup to preform a surgery. I unearthed the seedling to find a single tap root 5 inches long with very little other root growth??? Not bottomed outn not a ball of mess etc. PS the seed was pushing dirt in 3.5 days so i do not think it was a matter of soil temp or over watering. Oh well others in soil just in case. Peter
