jim start youre giant pumpkin seeds either on april 24-25th or on april 28th-29th these are four best days to start seeds in april according to the astroligical signs!use em they work and 5 to 7 days after germination get plants in the ground good luck grow a monster this year! keith

I've always been curious since I'm not a superstitious person in the least but....
If you plant or germinate on your favorite specific day whether it be a particular new moon sign, or astrological sign, or Grandma's 7th hour, of the 1st Sunday, of the 5th month, under the light of a halflit moon, while the coyote howls, etc., and you only get a 300# pumpkin....wouldn't you take that as your hint, that planting under that superstition, probably doesn't work and/or mean anything?
I mean no disrespect to anyone here really,but I don't see how superstitions, and especially astrological signs, are meaningful in anyway. Raised as a Christian, I've always been taught that astrology is against the principles and Word of God.

Kinda OT:

Southern, folks in biblical times paid close attention to the moon. In fact, to this day the Jewish calendar (not to mention the Muslim calendar and those of other major religions) is based on the lunar cycle. Jesus and his contemporaries would have celebrated holidays according to the lunar cycle. Some of those holidays, Sukkot, for example, are essentially harvest festivals. (so maybe this isn't so off topic afterall)

planting on moon cycles doesn't mean someone is into astrology or witchcraft, etc. There are some people who practice these things, but not everyone. I being a christian try to plant with the new moon phase because there seems to be logic behind it. God put nature into cycles that are monthly with the moon phase, tidal flows, etc having to do with the moons gravitational affects of the earth. It's a God given thing if it is looked at in this way. Some people do take a God given thing and turn it into sorcery, witchcraft, astrology, etc, yes. But it doesn't have to be that way. From what little I know about it, the gravity of the moon affects how plants grow somehow so it helps to go with nature's timing. But a biggy can be grown either way. Jimmy

The moon is favorable in our parts between 4/23 to 5/15 for Pumpkins,
Last frost is April 4th for Newark, NJ, April 25 for Hartford, CT, and May 7th for Albany, NY.

screw the moon. I'm planting on the weekend when I'm home from college since that's the only practical time for me to do it. Plop em in the buckets, then come home the next weekend and plop em in the ground, hoping that my parents don't kill them in the week inbetween. The germinating weekend will be April 30th weekend and the plunking in the ground will be the May 7th weekend.

i agree, i do not feel it is sinful to look at the moon for planting times or even to have a 'lucky number'. and to add onto what crammed said, my uncle (by marriage) is Orthodox and his Easter is May 1st. they take the Bible literally and feel us normal "Christians" are the ones that are wrong because we DONT go by the moon for Easter, etc.

I've done some basic research because I am considering growing a biblical garden (nothing too fancy, just plants referred to in the Bible). I don't think there are any specific mentions of pumpkins. But, there is a "gourd" towards the end of the story of Jonah. That might be very loosely interpreted as a "pumpkin." And, even there they had problems with pests destroying their fruit!

same principle applies to fisherman as well. The full moon and new moon have an affect on how fish feed, therefore how they bite!:) The tidal movements affect the fish the most in the ocean, but freshwater fish also, especially the big fish feed on the moon cycles making it a prime time to go for trophy size fish. The over all fishing is better at this time too. Somehow the gravity affects nature in many ways. I have never heard of witch fisherman though lol:) Jimmy

There are many old sayings that relate to this discussion. One of which is Plant root crops on the falling moon. (points down) Plant for all others on the rising moon. (points up) I like the Farmer's Almanac because it is full of these old timer observations.

I'm going to plant near to the moon days when the soil is right. I have several signs I can poke in the patch. After having installed my signs I will claim, to be painting, by the signs.

As Christians, our most important holiday will soon be here. Good Friday is always the 1st Friday after the full moon following the Vernal Equinox. This year Good Friday is on the full moon following the equinox. Many people don't know the reason for the different dates for Easter, and the Lentin season.

Correct me if I am wrong but this is the way I understand it.

Many of the old timers used to say,"plant early potatoes on Good Friday". Might have to use an ice chisel around here though. Especially with an early Easter.

I think it´s to long to keep the plant 3 weeks indoor.
I dont believe in moon-cycles. I trust in growing conditions as there were soil, temps, moisture.....
Moon? hmmmm? Can someone tell me "How should a seed in a germination-box in your basement affected by moon-cycle?"

Boehnke----- During the Full Moon the gravity from the moon will pull upon the seed's shell causing the shell to slide off from the leaves faster and their forth allowing the plant to start growing faster. The location of the seed does not matter the pull of the gravity is the main factor.

Last year I started my seeds indoors first week in April first couple of batches never germinated i was getting ancy as it was starting to get into May when i finally had my seeds germinate, Ive got allot of good seeds this year so am starting my seeds sunday april 3rd ( daylight savings time) this way i have plenty of time to start others if my first batch doesnt take, plants will be transplanted outdoors 2nd week in may with back-ups being started end of april just incase something happens
