Saved yourself some time filing is my guess. The thing the shell is meant to protect is most likely A-ok!

It'll be fine, if anything it'll help shed the seed coat. About 90% of the seed is just cotelydons/food, the important bit is the embryo and looks well protected.

I would not 'bury' it too deeply, like the 'one inch' common philosophy, nor push it into the SS mix - make the hole first and just place it in there, dash of water to consumate and I think it'd be very good, then; My 5 cents' worth, lol---eg

I'd try the Patons own paper towel method. Hopefully the embryo didn't crack. But not much you can do other than hope. Weird idea but if planting it in soil, then glue or seal the cracks? Certainly don't overwater it or rot will get in.

Yeah, I do paper towel, so ill try a little less soaking than other seeds, and treat it the exact same until the root pops

I also got a 2020 Paton and even tough mine didn't have a crack, it still sunk while soaking it in water-> and it didn't germinate until now

I would have said that it didn't matter - the floating or not; Happy for you that it sprouted! eg

NDV: I had the exact same thing happen with an 1886 Sexton. I treated it exactly the same as the other seeds (6 hour soak, 33 hours in paper towel) and it germinated just as quickly as my other seeds. Hopefully the same will be true for you!
