Caution with the woodchips. I have seen N levels deplete fast and make situations temporarily ungrowable.

Agree. Its a fine line. I wont be tilling them in, that would be a disaster. When tilled in, my guess is they can absorb far more than just nitrogen plus they can provide habitat for hordes of hungry insects. (The primary drawbacks of hugelkultur).

I might apply them to the soil surface after the soil temps are up and the insect populations are down... I need to try new things, especially things that might suppress the wrong sort of nematodes. Im guessing that there's a narrow window of benefit between a suppression nematodes and an increase of hungry soil insects.
