Over the years I have planted winter rye as it is the only crop that will not be killed by cold climates in my area. After sowing seeds, I cover the patch with ReMay. It is amazing how it helps with germination and establishment in the latter parts of October and early November.

Richmond Dave- Winter Rye is sometimes the only option for the coldest of climates since it can germinate in 33F/0.5C temperatures. If you are a little warmer and want less aggressive growth in the spring look for Triticale which germinates at 38F/3.3C.
