Would a fan give better or worse results than an umbrella, as far as keeping the baby pumpkin optimally destined for greatness? I hope you dont mind my asking.

Thanks, great to hear you like the diary, just remember things can change quick in the world of giant pumpkin growing.
Regarding shading the potential fruit, some light is a good thing just not direct light. The umbrella provides enough shade, but is still open above the ground. Complete darkness would not be advised.
A fan would not help the pumpkin at all it just moves air of the same temperature so shade/umbrella would be much more beneficial. We as animals feel cooler because of the fan allowing our skin to evaporate water resulting in a cooling effect. However, this is not the same for plants. While yes, transpiration does offer some cooling it also increase the demand for water movement and in times of high temperature this can increase the chance at leaf burn.
