I think that hail did you a favor. It will give the kin a small boost to not compete with all those auxins in the vine tip and to be the only sink for pumpkin juice/ phloem photosynthates.
In my experience thats about the optimal size/timing for removing the main. Obviously not optimal for having any extra females on the main, but I think its optimal for the chosen pumpkin.
Does she have a name yet? Pumpkins are like boats in that regard?
