True enough, the winds are one of pumpkin growers worst enemies! And they have definitely increased and more frequent over last 10 years or so. Then throw in a hurricane or two that we usually get every season makes it challenging. It would be so nice to develop a plant with strong lower leaves that hug closer to the ground. Good luck!
