Manganese will regulate the potassium in the plant. But, especially at the ph where its most soluble, that would sure be a lot of it. Its not highly soluble in sulfate form, so that may have saved them from getting poor results. Maybe the plant was getting calcium from down deeper. Thats kinda low on calcium or if their watering was just right, it (apparently) would be enough.
