There are even some cracks in the side of the tomato as though the interior was growing faster than the outside. I think the brown area seems to be suffering from diminished growth so it's not just aesthetic damage. I believe this was due to elemental sulfer (the yellowish dust which can be very helpful...) getting damp/wet and then penetrating the skin of the tomato. I am not sure if the damage is due to sulfer or the acid created when the sulfer got wet. It's a great disappointment that I hope you can learn from & avoid.

I washed all the sulfer off but the burned areas do correspond to where the sulfer was... I just got a little sloppy with it. Normally I would want the sulfer just in the cracks where rot might get started. Maybe this shows that you should never leave wet sulfer on your tomato. Dry sulfer powder should be fine because without moisture it should not be able to form a mobile acid that can penetrate the skin of the tomato...

Are you sure your tomato was burned by sulphur? I’ll get a sunburned tomato that looks like that.

Here’s some early thoughts , growth cracks maybe a little to much water , ?or at least be careful with the watering once they start cracking , too much water will make it worse ! Try to keep the tomato as dry as you can .I’ve never used sulfur before but I would think on a tomato the skin is very thin so you would put it on at the point of interest only ! Anyway keep er going good job !

Oh yea I also learnt a lot of lessens this year ! Will get hold of some sulfur in case ! And the difference Between shading and not shading maters , just like pumpkins the sun will super harden the skin and make them more susceptible to cracking !

I have a another one that got sunburned. It's more yellow... this is more brown. So I kinda see a similarity to blossom end rot... no lack of calcium but probably the excess acid interferes with calcium. I appreciate the comments, thanks.

I did have this happen once before with a heavily sulfered tomato which was also exposed to the outdoor elements, so shame on me for having it happen again. This is the first time where I believe I am seeing a hindrance of the growth.

It's not rotten but I will have to keep an eye on it. Will post some better numbers on some others soon & squeeze some of the confidence out of those Rebel Rousers :)

Keep it unrotten, or at least that's what I'd do, of course, two of my 3 tomatoes have rotten, so I'm not one to talk...
