So far i am liking what i see with the first truss megablooms on the big wixom. Greenbud yourl tomato looks awesome. It appears that the Megazac megablooms made it into the cross now i hope the larger tomaro size of the Domingo makes it into the cross too.

Wixom grower I topped them at 30 inches , the maters are 12 14 inches up . Do the plants back feed the tomato like pumpkins do ? And do these stems bend down with the weight of tomato ?stems are big and probably woody ! I have high early hopes for these maters , they will be too early for a weigh off , but Ron Wallace will be my witness he’s a good friend of mine !

The best thing to do is to suport the tomato in a hamic or a sling. You don't wont the stem to bend or tear off !!! Its hard to say if it will back feed or not but 3 to 5 leaves after the tomato is a good idea and it also helps shade the tomato from the sun. Sun scorch can happen ask porkchop !

Oh there shaded ! Also your 6.23 Domingo and big wixom look exactly alike as plants and first truss megablooms ! I have two of each , shouldn’t they look different because ones a cross , and the 6.23 is a pure Domingo ?

Yup I’ll get them in a hammock or something sooner that later I suppose they will grow faster now .back to the plants yea you never know the 6.23 might be big wixom # 2 which wouldn’t be a bad thing !

this answered the question I was about to post., i have a couple plants that i thought I better investigate on sport slings i think I did it ok, Gives plenty of room for growth and suppor. I was actually very worried I was gonna knock the fruit off but the stems are very thick and fused. Fingers crossed. Another question tho, when does a tomato fruit put on most of its weight is it day 20 to 30 or later? Obviously some types might vary but would that be a realistic time frame?

It is possible that the 6.23 Domingo DMG got crossed with a Megazac those are the 2 main plants that i grow and they may have been only about 6 feet apart last year so you never know ??? I now have to see if mine look different or not ? Greenbud are you on a tomato contest team and if so what team are you on ?

Usually it may take the first 20 days to reach 2 lbs then you might gain 1 lb every 4 days after that.

Nope no team, I’m far ahead of schedule don’t believe I can make a official weigh off ! But Ron Wallace is president of the Sngpg and would be a witness for me ! If I’m that lucky ! Just got missed with hail today , but would love to be on a team ! If not this year than next ! Thanks

2 lbs in the first 20 days? that would be impressive. OK so another newbie question. when do we count the start of fruit set, is that flower opening or actual fruit sited which I guess is 2 or 3 days after flower opens? thats impressive growth. Im not seeing that from these plants although they are untested types.

Their is an early entry form you can fill out for weighing tomatoes early. That is how most people do it because it is very difficult to time your tomato for an October weighoff. All you have to do is take it to a grocery store or any store with a certified scale and have 2 witnesses watch you have it weighed and take pictures of it on a scale with the weight and a picture of the date the scale was last certified or updated.

Yes 2 lbs in 20 days is fast and that is the pace you need for a 6 lb+ sized tomato.
When i see a sign of the tomato showing through the flower i call that day 1 some tomatoes may take 3 to 5 days to polinate so it is difficult to say the exact day 1

the seeds I have growing is an Australian heirloom beefsteak. sets clusters fo fruit to a half pound or more each. Its a very heavy stemmed plant I thought I'd give it a go. put out a few fused blooms adn large flowers on the first couple trusses. I'll keep working on this line but i also have received some well know giant cultivars so I have them just sown.

The kind of “ber” we’re talking about can heal and the tomato will continue to grow and be ok...it just stunts them...that could just mean it’ll be a 5 pounder instead of an 8... win win...there’s nothing like being in PB territory!.. keep it up,
