We are coming up towards the middle of winter...I usually figure Jan 15th for that point. What are your plans for next spring. Anything you are going to do different. What do you think will be the hot seeds and do you have them.

For me, I might try to stack my soil to get more depth. 6 inches does not seem enough. If I do it, then I will have to grow less plants. Going to take a few years to gain more soil. I know many of you think Domingo is the seed to plant. For me, Domingo has never done well. My best for the last 4 years were in order...Wixom Slammer, MegaMuttD, MegamuttD 2, Big Marley. I am looking at DAP to ripe...last year was a bit different of an environment...the MMD's flashed way to fast. Earlier start or later start could make a difference of best variety.

I feel that anything Marley/Porkchop/Lambchop (Especially the 5.71 and 9.65) will be hot. Domingo I feel will be again dominant this year. I am growing a lot of my own which most trace back to the 8.22, or 5.68 Porkchop. I got my hands on some 5.71, there is a few from Chris K that I will be growing. 4 offical, and 1 damaged over 4.75 last year, I hope to up that by a half pound for my best 5.

Doing differently, or the same as last year. I'll be using landscape fabric and not black plastic. I have a broadfork, and time permitting, I will dig down 12-16 inches. The one spot with two plants that got dug deeper had my biggest. I'll be moving the tomatoes to a sunnier fall section of the garden.

After having given this some thought, I believe that the different varieties do better under slightly different environmental conditions. These conditions are related to the weather in a particular season and when in the season you plant. As an example, the same seed might perform differently in a given season if planted early rather than late. And a different variety might do better one year than the next. So it comes down to the variety you plant and when you actually plant it. This is why I will always grow several different varieties each year. Just my thoughts. Agree? or not?

I’m going to grow in my greenhouse again; main thrust the same but better control of environmental conditions. I might install a frost wall to keep soil warmer, a little help on the light front early season as I suffer a little here early season - also looking at extending space per plant, but that would mean less plants given the same spaced greenhouse. A larger greenhouse would be great - but it may need to wait until another year.

Seed line up i’m still deciding, including varieties - that’ll be driven by the number of plants I grow. I grew 7 plants last year.

Team Canuckle Heads

One thing I'm going to do is go to a single row of plants. I've always grown 2 rows and my biggest tomatoes come off the outside row. I think the back row doesn't get enough sun.

Also thinking I'd like to try keeping the rain off a few plants. When it's hot and humid I pick up disease whenever there's any overhead water. I run a sprinkler on my cucumbers and had to pull the plants next to them that got hit with the water

Wixom MI.

Well my 8" to 10" layer of soil sitting on top of a solid clay bace worked like a gaint bowl of soupy mud last year !!! Two things i learned from last year is that i will have to plant everything on hills or raised soil beds and give my plants more space to grow by spacing them further apart and spraying them with disease control every week. Blight killed me last year.
