Now is the time to be picking out which seed you believe will give your the best chance to grow a Big One. Which seed do you think will produce the winning tomato for 2019? Are you favoring Big Zac or Domingo or one of the crosses or something else? Will the winning tomato be the result of good weather, growing techniques or the seed grown?

Well the 5.95 konieczny(Domingo) has had the top spot the last 2 years. The 8.22 marly 2017 and the 9.44 sutherland last year. So im hoping for the tripple crown !!! (-:

I honestly think growing techniques and weather has more to do with it than seed but i also think everyone needs to find out witch veriety will grow best for them because of their soils or their environment.

For me The 7.10 Foss and offspring like 6.06 Spaziani. These have preformed the best in my garden the last two years. I'll throw down a few Megazac offspring that I think will do well along with some of the Big Marley cross I made last year. I agree with Chris that it's more about technique and weather than the individual seed, but the winning tomato this year will be from a known seed that grows big!

I’ll be growing Big Zac, Domingo & Delicious (covering all the bases) - just a few of each. I think it’s also a numbers game - grow enough plants and a few will have some awesome megablooms. Concentrate on those!

I’ll take what I can on my limited plants, but I imagine I won’t settle unless it’s a triple bloom at least. That probably decides how big it ‘could’ be - and then growing techniques will decide how close you get to that potential.

My best hope is for the megamutt...6.32 or seeds from my current winter hydro plant (which is from the 6.32). Have to like 5 trusses of megablossoms in a row. It might finish just over a pound..but I think the seeds will be winners.

I got a number of mega mutts but don't see any really good megas so far but hard to tell

Their are two megamutts
Megamutt D
Megamutt Z

Bnot has the megamutt D
I think garden rebel has Megamutt z

They are reverse crosses of each other.

Megamutt z is megazac x megadom
Megamutt D is megadom x megazac

Megadom is megamarv x Domingo
Megazac is megamarv x digzac

I think the megadom seed is every bit as good as the megazac but wasn't planted that much because it was only 5.61 lbs and lost out to the 6.23 megazac. I still have a ton of the megadom seeds and i plan on planting them again this year.

Here is a picture of the 5.61 Megadom with my 6.23 and 6.13 Megazacs.
Megamutt is a cross of these two.

I am pinning my hopes on 5.95 Konieczny Domingo, 6.23 Konieczny Megazac & some of it’s descendants.
I will plant some Big Zac & Delicious, just not with as high hopes.

I think the Mega Mutt that I got from Bnot. Last year I got a 4 pound tomato using Miracle Grow type products. This year better soil and fertilizer. Rebel and Wixom sent me seeds so I might do well with those seeds.

It really is a big deal to get the right seed. When you cross two unstable hybrid seeds you really are doing a crap shoot, very unpredictable results. This will get interesting.

Marv what seed out their would you call stable ?

Unstable and unpredictable is how I like to grow. I think the Bigzac is pretty topped out in weight. Unpredictable hybrids and surprises!

I agree with you rick on the big zac. Without crossing it with other verieties i think it is near maxed out !!!

8.22 here, without a doubt. However, I'm pleased with my 5.04 used in the winter grow... Seems to have all the same good traits. For me the Domingo lines appear to be stable, and also the best.

A seed should be stable by the time you are growing F5. That means you make a cross and then for the next 4 years you grow the seed while each year picking the tomato with the characteristics you want, for us, big. By F5 the seed should then reliably produce the same plant and tomato each year thereafter. We have continued to select out Big Zac seeds for 9 or 10 years now and so Big Zac would be a stabilized hybrid, Delicious, Brutus Magnum, Domingo and MegaMarv are all stabilized seeds as they always were heirloom and thus stabile at the start.

Hope to see the first real 3 kg tomato in Germany at the end of the season. There will be a lot more giant tomato growers competing more seriously but sharing knowledge and experiences...

Hey marv i think bnot is tring to stabilize the megamutt. I believe he is on a f2 or f3 right now. That seems to be one of his goals.

Patrick Schenk is from Germany and he did grow an 8 pounder but I don't think it was registered because Udo holds the record right now for a 6.22 tom.

Patrick Schenk had no witnesses for his 8 pound tomato. Wizzy posted that's reason why its no record.

Karkos versus Schenk sounds like a Heavyweight MMA match. Someone could break through the 10 pound mark this year. I think the best Domingo seeds available now come through Konieczny and the best Big Zac through Boudyo. The new hybrids are as yet unproven but have potential. Delicious, Brutus Magnum and Megamarv are dark horses.

I am not sure how to correctly number the F generations. Someone help.

MegaDom x Megazac-5.24-6.32

I am thinking that if you grow the 5.24 that you are growing the F2 , but not sure.

My hydro 6.32 should then be an F4. Wixom crosses them then I work on stabilizing them. I think I have an F5 Wixom Slammer in hydro right now.

As far as I know..current leader in the winter grow is Zowie...with a hydro 5.24

When you make a cross, the seed from the resulting tomato is F1. You plant that F1 seed and the seeds from any tomato grown on that plant are F2 and so on.
