Here is my theory..Dan S has grown twice in the winter challenge. Both times the following set he set a new world record. Coincidence, maybe.. but my theory is summer is so much more forgiving that it becomes easy to grow big.

What are your guesses to the secret of his success?

Amazing grower no doubt. From tidbits I picked up over the last couple of years, he said he doesn't top his plants. Also, greenhouse grown if I remember. Greenhouse grown seems to squeeze out an extra pound or two. Several of the best growers have greenhouses. There seems to be exceptions to every rule. Porkchop grows outdoors.

There is no lack of sun out there... Dont confuse walla walla climate with seattle climate.
Some cold nights I'm sure but warmer and sunnier I suspect the climate and soil is favorable... in addition to him being a tomato genius.

Greenhouses are nice.
You can control temperature,moisture,lighting,insects.
Does he winter grow in a greenhouse?

I don't think he is growing in a greenhouse..I don't know for sure, but my impression was he used covering over the plants. I remember discussion of shady grow sites etc..it seemed to me he was not a believer in the necessity of full sun. He might even be employing the usage of shade nets. My biggest impression of his technique was the focus on organic. It seems a majority of the advice he gave me was to focus on things that is for the beneficial for microbiology. Before I brought in my 50 cu yards of top soil this year, I had a good discussion with him of the various forms of om that could be mixed in. I also know he was very meticiculous. How much water and where it is collecting for the roots. He knows his soil characteristics.

I am not sure what happens next winter. I have a person in mind that I am going to ask if they would be willing to oversee the challenge. But if they accept..I hope they will find a way to include Dan..even though he may not be back on this board by then.

He was an incentive for me to try new things. Everybody has part...and none of us are perfect.
