I know the winter tomato growing contest is now taking place. And then there is the Team Tomato Contest that everyone is waiting to see who and how they have been teamed up. I was wondering what some of you might think about also having a Triple Crown Event this coming summer as well. Anyone could enter. The winner would be the person whose combined weight for a tomato, a giant cucumber and an onion was the biggest. Growers might then develop an interest in giant onions and giant cucumbers by way of this contest. I plan on trying to grow a big onion and a big cucumber this next season. It would be even more interesting if there was some competition. Onions and cucumbers don't take up a lot of space and hardly anyone has much experience with them. Anyone interested? Have I lost my mind from the first snow?

I really enjoy growing onions and the bigger the better. Just need some giant seeds from both then I'm in.

What it takes to grow a 15 pound onion is more than any of us might care to do but I think a 7 pound onion is doable. Also a 10 pound cucumber is well within range. A ten pound tomato could be a target. Total weight, of the three, 27 pounds.

bnot, you don't need much space for a cucumber plant, maybe 4'x6'- 4'x8' at the most. I know the GVGO membership packs will all have Giant Cucumber seeds as it's the GVGO other veg of the year.

Ok, joined the gvgo again for this year. Previous years i loved the seed package. I guess I will try for the triple crown if the cucumber seeds arrive. Now to get giant onion seeds. What is this about growers not willing to put the effort into growing a 15 pound onion...we have more ambition than that. Time for me to reread Peter Glazebrooks diary entries.

Giant onion seeds on order. Thank you Kevin Fortey for making giant seeds available. Lets see....15 pound onion, 12 pound cucumber, 9.5 pound tomato...36.5 pounds is all I need :)

Giant Cucumbers take very little space actually. I grew some on the fence around my garden. They grow up the fence and the only real space needed on the ground is where the vine starts to grow up. They sit in little hammocks once you get the one started that you want. One cucumber per vine just like big tomatoes.

Dan, when I get the onion seeds I ordered I can send you 1/2 of them. I don't need 50 seeds. They should be good..from best onion grower in the world. Not sure about cucumber seeds...i will be waiting on the GVGO package, not sure how many I will have.

I have 5 small packets of giant cucumber seeds that were grown from giant cucumber seeds from Patrick White who was the record holder in Alaska. I will send a packet to the first 5 growers who list their names here and then send me their mailing address. Lubadub@aol.com

Rick: Seeds are on the way. Hank: I am not sure. They are Mammoth Zeppelin. I started mine in the ground last year on June 1 and actually harvested one cucumber as it was done growing and then grew a second one on the same vine before the GPC Weigh-Off.

There is the question of what is going to be allowed for weighing location. We know we can weigh tomatoes for early weighoff...what about for onion and cucumber?

Farmer Brown the seeds are on the way. Two packets left. Proof of weights will be easy. The person who believes they have won can submit pictures of their fruits on a certified scale or if they don't want to do that they can Email the pictures to me. Losers need send nothing. LOL

I would guess that we would weigh them onn a certified scale at a store like we do tomatoes bnot !!! But have to use the honor system since the gpc doesn't do onion or cucumbers !!!

I plan on starting my onions just before Xmas. Also I will buy some onion plants from that place in Texas in case my seeds fail. Better safe than sorry. Last year they had Ailsae onion plants at Lowe's. I grew some but did not get much from them. Maybe it was because of not fertilizing or watering them or having enough sunlight? My score last season was tomato just under 5 pounds, 9 pound cucumber and 1 pound onion for a total of 15.
