I wanted to thank all for the help with my many questions this year. Two questions I was hoping for opinions on. First, if temps are gonna be 87 to 89 for a few days, put up shade cloth temporarily or still go full sun? Second, with a mega bloom on the under side where all the tomatoes meet together, is it normal if the area is black or is it a bad sign of fungus or mold? Thanks for the help. Our biggest mater is day 16 today and growing steady. Jim

I'm really gonna try to pamper a few plants this year and was going to do just that, shade them just on the real hot days...we only get 10 or so here in NY...I'll try an old umbrella on a stick I think...black on the end is not good...could be blossom end rot, could also be from touching them...not sure for your area about fungus or mold...day 16...you should see some real growth in the next week or so...LUcky...

Black of anything usually isn't a good sign. Post a picture to your diary and the tomato masters will tell you what it is right away....if you haven't topped the plant i would go on to the next truss and try for a new dandy....If you have topped the plant, just let a sucker grow out and turn that into your main stem. good luck!

Could be blossum end rot( bad) but more likely catfacing caused by low temps when plants little ( no problem ). BER more of a big black spot.

Patrick, I looked up photos for catfacing and that is exactly what it looks like. Thanks for the info and hopefully no problem.
