It was made official by the GPC officials and is now in the Guinness book of world records.

Good discussion I hope GPC will have the guts to address but since it is not a pumpkin I doubt they care. If a grower has a large tomato they think is a WR should they pick it before it is over ripe and then contact a GPC official to witness the picking and weighing like Dan Mac Coy did? Or is it ok to let it ripen to the point it starts leaking an hour or two after picking, put a sign next to it declaring it a WR, post it for congrats on BP before the GPC sees it, take a video of it and send it to the GPC and ask for forgiveness? Sorry Dan but I think this is pretty close. The 8.61 is a WR certified as such.I just believe the GPC should clarify what will be accepted in the future. If we gon't have to worry about the tomato leaking and if we don't have to have a GPC official witness the picking and weighing it makes everything a lot easier. The downside is that it takes away from the validity of the sport.

In Spain no gpc reps so if I grew a WR, there would be nobody to witness it

I do not believe that gpc is the official keeper of the world record. It is guiness that declares the world record. GPC rules are irrelevant..all that matters is what guiness requires.

Patrick & Mark, I'm not sure why you continue to do this. Dan contacted me about his tomato as I am the west coast GPC representative. Since I don't have the same luxury as Don Young, I couldn't drive the 8 hours to Dan's to witness the weighing of the fruit. However he was instructed to take a video and many pictures to submit as evidence for the confirmation. This all was done by Dan and submitted. Based on all evidence that was submitted, it was determined to be a sound legal fruit by the GPC executive committee. The GPC also has an agreement with Guinness to certify world record fruits and vegetables, which is why Dan's fruit was recognized by Guinness and the GPC as the new world record.

BS Tree Doctor. I live in Soldotna,AK- look on a damned map. It is 150 miles over the mountains to Anchorage and they got a GPC rep out to me. Bnot Guiness is not rigorous and has not a thing to do with this. This has only to do with how lazy GPC is regarding monitoring anything besides pumpkins. Since most of you can 't grow anything anyway shut the - up. What pisses me off is that I can't even enter my tomatoes without getting the GPC to witness the cutting yet you clowns in the lower 48 can get away with anything.I will see you boys in the fall .

So, going forward, what exactly are the rules for a world record tomato? I thought I knew them but now I am not so sure.

I had to sit on my hands for a few minutes, before I went crazy in reply. There are many world record vegetables that hold the Guinness world record that are not certified by the GPC. My point was the GPC can certify them, but to hold the record, it can be done without GPC. I probably don't grow big enough anyway to be allowed to have an opinion.......

Going forward....according the GPC rules..does witness by gpc rep mean that it has to be done by the regional representative..or can the regional representative delegate it to another individual or in this case a video. There are many growers that are a thousand miles away from their nearest regional rep...it is unreasonable to expect a regional rep to be able to witness personally all potential world record fruit.

Patrick I will assure you the GPC wasn't lazy nor have they cared less about any category As for the world record, here is the way it went down from my perspective, and I know your first question will be "What do you have to do with the tomato category" So here is my answer to your proposed question. I have and current are the sponsor for the tomato category and I furnish the prize money's for world records, including the 10 pound challenge currently in play. I was also the sponsor when Dan MacCoy broke the world record and Don Young at the time was in constant contact with me. Back to the world record, We knew of this before most as it was indeed a contender for the world record, Jim was in constant contact with me and the GPC as to legitimizing the record. The grower was given a set of instructions to follow, which he did, and after this was all done, I had made it abundantly clear that I would make the trip to verify, but with the information sent in by the grower which was exactly what was asked of him, there was no need for anyone to attend. Now I would also like to know who the GPC rep was in Anchorage????

My tomato measured close to Dan Mac Coys at 30 plus inches at fair time. I had seen Dan's and Fabrice's diaries and knew they had both been concerned about a segment ripening and starting to leak which in their minds would DQ their tomato so they both picked early knowing their tomatoes could have been heavier if allowed to totally ripen. Dan had two guys ( Young and Foss) come to witness the picking and weighing. So I called the Alaska State Fair Superintendent Kathy Liska who told me "no problem - they have weighed more world records there than perhaps anywhere else. She said they are a GPC site and she represents the GPC in Alaska. She sent her representative out to my ome 150 mi from Anchorage and he would not let me pick it until he had photographed and inspected it with another witness. He then accompanied me to the weighing.

Eddy I know you are well respected in the hobby and you financially support many clubs and individuals. Much appreciated by everyone. That has nothing to do with this issue, No matter how you and Andy W try to explain GPC actions there was a marked difference in handling of the last two world records. I and I am sure others just want to know how should we handle the next. 1) Does ANYONE have to witness the picking. 2) Can we just get away with weighing it on a certified scale in front of a witness like any other early tomato entry. OR for a world record do we have to abide by a higher standard.

Patrick, Your questions are all valid and good, And absolutely there was a difference in the last 2 records, but PLEASE understand, each scenario has to be handled different, because of location. It could be in Spain, Australia or who knows where. The second is time on the growers end and on the GPC end. The best thing, bar none is to contact the GPC FIRST IRREGARDLESS WHERE YOU LIVE, all the members are listed on the GPC site with emails, and phone numbers in some instances. So that's a great place to start. Another thing is, IF a grower has a contender, it would sure make everybody's job a whole lot easier by letting the GPC know because the GPC needs time to react, things like family, jobs and life get in the way.
Now I'm not sure if the site you called indeed followed up by contacting anyone on the GPC board or not but that is one thing that should have happened. I am certain there has been a discussion or 2 since this whole thing stated out back in September on the GPC board and I'm sure there will be a few more, But I know the rules are being looked at. I will make a point of discussing this with Andy and the GPC in Niagara. Also if anyone else has relevant questions, post them here, send me an email.

eddie what if you pick and weigh a tomato and find out that you broke the record by .20 lbs but buy the time a gpc rep.has a chance to see it it looses .35 lbs after a few days and now is below the record ? witch weight would count ?

Chris, that is why we ask for video and pictures with witnesses. If that is done during the initial weighing then that would help solve many issues.

Ya what Jim said, Don't put a question into a situation that can clearly can be avoided. Contact your GPC rep and go from there.
