See General Discussion. If you guys can grow giant tomatoes, you can grow giant cucumbers. It may be something you guys in Minnesota can concentrate on after the guys in Washington and Alaska whip your tails again this year with the tomatoes.

I think Minnesota might have a couple of tomato growers coming out of retirement next summer. If Minesota doesn't have the top ten tomato average in the nation next year I will be really surprised.

Q tip that depends on how agile you are for you 3-4 feet apart I do five so I don't trip over them. I believe Dan M and I will be growing in 2017 but defeating Patrick and Dan S maybe difficult. Blight has been ramped the last several years with all the moisture. The Twin Cities recorded the most rain ever in one year in 2016.

Hi Bill - I'm talking about cucumbers not maters - How much space do you need to grow a giant cuc or do you grow them vertically?

I grow them in my high tunnel up a single string 8 ft tall with plants spaced 3-4 ft apart.

There is a book written by Bernard Lavery titled "How to grow giant vegetables" that has a big section on growing cucumbers. His cucumbers were 24 inches long and 18 inches in circumference. In 1991 he grew a 20 pound cucumber. He grew them suspended in the air under cover. He mentions Zeppelin and Telegraph varieties. Lavery, at the time he was alive and growing, held many world records.
