I was watering my watermelons yesterday and noticed I had a small melon on the main about 6 ft out and about 8" before the tip. This is the earliest that I've seen any sign of a melon. Should I pinch this one off and wait a little longer or pollinate it? I have 3 plants in the ground, 1 at 7 ft and the other two about 5 ft. Secondaries are about a ft long and the plants have males open now. How is everyone else doing with their watermeons?

I have 3 plants only set out 2 weeks ago, just starting to vine. I am growing them in a green house so weather won't be a factor. I grew 1, 56 lbs last year, and I'd sure like to break that this year. Eddy

I would say set it fo fun but cut it off before it's too big.
set it if you want but it's a little early for the size of your plants.
I have one plant right now, many vines over 5 feet long and about 30 other vines.
Last year I grew a 120lber and a 156lber.
Should easaly top that this year. 200lbs is very likly.
Grow a Big'gun!

Ok heres what happened to my watermelons. I told my parents not to put mulch down where I planted the seeds. So I go out there and theres mulch right where I told them not to.

I shoot for under 10 feet. around 8-9ft works best for me.
AgFever, e-mail me this fall and I will hook you up with some great seeds.

Well I went out there today and moved the mulch and i saw two seedlings popping up. So it looks like I'm growing watermelons after all.
