Snapple Beverage Company is offering a $25,000 prize for breaking the world record weight for Watermelons. The current record of 262 pounds was set in 1985. I'm wondering if the things we know about growing giant pumpkins would translate into growing a world record watermelon? Considering the weight gains that have been added to the world record pumpkin since 1985, it kind of makes you wonder why the watermelon record hasn't increased sililarly. This $25,000 could be just waiting for a real giant vegetable grower (a pmupkin grower) to win it! Does anyone know anything about growing a world record watermelon...souce for seeds, ideal climate, etc? For more info on the contest go to www.snapple.com. If all of your grow watermelons this year instead of pumpkins, I might have a chance in the pumpkin weigh offs...yeah, that's the ticket!

Does anyone know if there are any problems associated with growing watermelons and pumpkins together (ie disease issues)?

"Do not submit an entry if the watermelon does not weigh in excess of 262 pounds."

I will try this year!!! Last year I got only 180 lbs with my big one, but maybe this year the mowes do not eat the neck of the plants. Talking seriously, my goal is to overpass the 100 Kg barrier, which is 220 lbs. I will very happy to get that.
