I grafted some melons to rampart gourds, but 1 gourd was too big for the melons. So I figured I'll grow it out. Do they need a trellis or do they grow on the ground?

If you grow on the ground you might want to get them out of contact with the soil.

they produce a nice bottle gourd of about 15-20 lbs.

Thanks, I will probably grow them on a trellis for space saving reasons

that would work, just have to put it in a sling to suport the weight
