Thanks to all answering my questions here on the message board and thanks to Chris Kent for donating extra 318.5 seeds for first year members at the Giant Watermelon Growers Club this year. My melon came in at 208.5 pounds at the Harvest Bash in Pawnee City, NE yesterday, in spite of the plant and melon being hit by a hail storm in June (that meant the insurance company totaled my car and is replacing the roof of my house) and the neighbors putting up a fence a few weeks after it was planted that blocked the first couple hours of sunlight in the morning. The old record was 143 pounds.

That was a great watermelon. I didn't hear the story about the hail yesterday. Amazing how well it did after that kind of hail. And for a first year grower, that is great success. I hope to see you in Pawnee City next year too.

I think the goal for next time is to beat my own weight -- which means a bigger melon and/or a smaller me, both good thing to try for.
