I noticed you posted in your diary about females with male parts. I have only seen this once before and this year my first two were like that. Is it the weather? I pollinated the 229 Holloway X 229 Edwards. Would it be open or 229X229X229? LOL

I'd like to say I'm brilliant and have the answer but I don't. I do "think" it's genetic based on trying to decipher some terms and how different authors use them. The (a) gene isolated by Rosa (1928) refers to andromonoecious.

This is strictly my interpretation! Other terms you might research monoecious, dioecious, androdioecious, gynodioecious, gynomonocious and unisexual flower.

I never did do a test to see if the hermaphrodite flowers were self fertile. I've seen it a bunch here in nearly every genetic line I've planted but not every plant or every female on a plant. Just making notes when I see it to know for sure if it is a clean cross or possibly "open" if I haven't selfed the plant.

i have seen alot of females with male parts. I will ditto what brother Dave said. It does seem that the more vigorious a plant is the more likely it is to have males parts in the female flower.
I always consider the female selfed when i see one, so i then change my plan and do self it.

I have seen 2 male flowers at one node though.
What does it look like when it has both parts ?

So far I've only had 2 females show up, both were like that. The plants have already filled up the space and I just starting to find females. I notice most of the females in our eatin melon patch are transgendered also.
