I live in central Texas and I tried to grow pumpkins for a shop contest last year and it was a fail. I also grew watermelons for the first time and they did great so the guys in my shop want to have a giant watermelon contest this year. I ordered some seeds called Russian giants and some Weeks NC giants to try but I can't really find anything on the web about the Russian so I'm thinking about putting them to the side. Anybody hear of them?

I have never heard of the Russian Giants either. Bubba....Trust me the seeds you get from the store are not the same thing as the ones you can get from competitive growers. They just don't have the growing power of the carefully pollinated seeds you find on this site. Sometimes people get lucky with a store bought seed and grow one to a couple hundred pounds, but that is the exception. You want Carolina Cross seeds with known genetics from a grower. Melon growers on this site are very generous and will give you their seeds. All you have to do is ask them, then you can send the grower a self addressed stamped bubble envelope. Let me know if you would like some seeds of mine. My email is cmc27inct@aol.com

Hey Bubba I've got seeds I can send you also, just send me an email if interested at danjenben4@hotmail.com. Also, consider joining a club like Giant Watermelon Growers. Lots of great growers in that club and we are having a silent auction in just a few days so that is a great time to get some of the best seeds available. Good luck!!

Yeah I know y'all are correct I was just hoping they would be good enough to beat my coworkers. I am about 150 miles from Luling and they told my boss he couldn't enter the contest, something about sign up and be back with your melon within 1 hour.

Bubba, hide yer melon in the back of yer wife's car...leave, put it in yer truck & reappear!!! LOL Seriously, I do respect the idea of what the Luling folks are doing!!! 2nd idea if winning is #1...give your shop friends the store bought seeds, and grow the real one's for yourself!!! Again...just kidding...equal fair play, is the only way to know who is the Champion of Central Texas!!! Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne PS...if you don't get enough seeds for your contest, send an email!!
