For the stump or the melon?
i cover my melons with a loose sheet to prevent sunburn.
Have begun making a small hoop house though.
Sometimes you cover to keep critters away.
Last year,I was disqualified from the state fair because of a small hole in the bottom of my melon.
A mouse had started on it,and had only begun to scratch the rind,but created a "hole" nonetheless.
Would have finished second.

Very. I wouldn't use a sheet. You need something that allows air flow to prevent rot.

I guess the risk would be lower in NY. A sheet might prevent sunburn but thats not the only reason for shade. Just like with insulation the air gap lowers the temp a little bit, prolonging maturity. More days more pounds. A blanket at night when it gets cool up there is also a good idea. Cool in the day warm at night.

how big is yur melon porky im at 30lbs aprox, but im happy plant is dieing but melon still growing pizza lmao

The older one (near 30 days) is arond 46 and the 19 day old is over 60...fun stuff..
