I started way to late, ignorance is bliss! I grew a 48lb last year off of a 166 Mudd. Due to Septic construction I had to move my patch to very poor and un amended un tested soil, but I went ahead and put out five plants. They were more for experience than competition. One plant gave up after a set was about five- eight pounds. Look to have a disease of some kind, but none of the others seem to have it. I have dealt with low calcium and seem to have gotten over the hump and I have some melons going! Doubt I scare anyone with any of them, but one plant is throwing some very nice shape melons. I decide to focus on that plant and attempt to push just one on that plant. One of the other plants is producing sound fruit just a bit small on one side!!!! The last plant has two that had a little BER. I cleaned them and put captan on them as well as adjusting up the calcium and they are growing faily well, besides it's a bit late to set any more! Anything over 88lbs will be a new PB, so, send me those 160lbs vibes, and I just hide out and grin!!!

The weights at the Russellville, AL contest this coming weekend should show the size potential for the regions growers. It is an open contest with a generous prize payout. You would assume the weights a week later at Cullman would be even larger.

They are recruiting growers and large watermelons for this weekend but I do not know the specifics. Cliff Knight or Jerry Vaughn should help you on information but I do know it is open to all growers.

here is what they say on their page... Downtown Russellville is home of the Franklin County Watermelon Festival. It’s a time for a lot of good fun and of course, juicy watermelons that can cool a hot summer day in the South. It began in 1981 and has become a must-do event for thousands. This spectacular family event offers two days of non-stop music, contests and entertainment, as well as, a pageant (held in July), arts & crafts, 5k run, antique car & truck show, tasty festival foods, tractor show, bike ride and lots of free watermelon. Watermelon contests include the largest melon, seed spitting, best tasting melon, best dressed melon, and the most unusual melon.
That last part was for a spencer melon !! LOL
i don't see anything about prize money.

I love the heat too Chris! I have to work in 100+ temps all the time so being out in high heat is great! I think it's suppose to be cooler around 90 this weekend. I'm finding a lot of pear shaped culls the last few days. If those pears cost me a personal best then I'm blaming it all on Spence Lol.
