We've had almost 5 1/2" of rain here since Thursday. Today, I noticed a couple of the real small vines (less than the size of a pencil) have somewhat curled or wilted looking leaves. It's nothing major on the two plants that have this but I wondered if it could be from the excess water?

If watermellons get to much water, they will wilt and drown.i have had this problem the last 3 years mainly when the plants are small.

Thanks! These plants are at least 15' x 15' now. It's minor and really only two of those smallest vines. I just thought it was odd to all of the sudden show up but then I thought about the pretty much consistent rain we've had since Thursday and thought that very well might be the issue. Rain is supposed move out today so maybe they'll have a few days to dry.

It is almost impossible to over stress the importance of excellent soil drainage with watermelon plants. Watermelons originated in the sand desert of the Kalahari in eastern equatorial Africa and the land in those parts have a great difficulty holding onto any amount of water at all.So it is in their genetic development to grow in well drained soil.

We have a kind of sandy loam soil here so it usually drains well. After four days and almost 6" of rain it's probably running out of places to go.
