I planted three plants about a week ago. When I was out checking on them this evening, two of the plants rotted. It was the stems right below the soil line. When I pulled up the plants, the stem leading into the ground were brown and going soft. What would be the cause of this?

Sounds like damping off.

No, I didnt get a picture of them. I just pulled them and kept on moving.

cool & wet will = damping off if the plants were very small.
Does that fit?

Ok, it does sound like what happened. We were getting a good bit of rain and the night time temps were a little cool. So damping off sounds like it. Thanks for the info!

I have handled this problem in the past by using growlights at night over my melon plants. A better option might have been to have left them in pots and inside under growlights at night. This will help keep them warm at night and also to grow much faster.

Sounds like damping off to me too. If you can keep the plant warmer and drier by leaving your cold frame on it through an early cool wet spell, you will be much better off.
