Ants will farm aphids. Do you see any signs of aphids?
Had a mum last year that ants decided to nest in. They had the biggest mound of dirt worked over that plant and it did kill it.

Ants are bad to the bone if it is wet weather and you have plastic over your plants.

I put plastic down to aid in warming soil but ants got so bad underneath that I had to pull it up earlier than I wanted.

I see DE as an organic control for ants but I don't see how you would apply that if you have fabric on, since it is a powder. Bio Works has 2 biopesticides listed but neither is labeled for ants. I hope someone else can chime in soon and help you out.

I use a product called Terro. Its a liquid that you place on a piece of cardboard and the ants eat it and well, that's it. You could make a little contraption to keep the liquid from weather and easy for ants to find. I find Terro Ann Killer at the local hardware store. Good Luck. Cornmeal, ants will eat it and swell up and well that's it for them. Same with coffee grounds. As with all things you use in the garden, moderation.

Jerry, if you are looking for a fire ant product that is safe for your garden, check out the label on Extinguish. Most products for fire ants carry the warning to not use in gardens or on edible plants. I think you are safe with Extinguish. You will need to get control of fire ants before pollination time if that is what you have. For native ants, just go to Walmart and buy ant bait in the small white containers and the poison will never enter your plant.
