So what are some tips like how far out on vine ,temps for good growth does it need to be on main sect..

I believe I've been told you want to try and have at minimum 150ft of total vine length before setting a melon for any chances of decent size. Melon plants like heat but I cover the bloom & set with shade at day one of pollination to keep the melon itself cool. Not sure on vine positions. Hopefully some more experienced growers will "weighin" on this for you. I'd like to hear their opinions on this matter also,lol.

Thanks goober 150 is good to know.so I take it that the 1st Mellon's on vine aren't the choice ones

150 ft seems long a way before setting the first fruit, can this be right, this is my first ever try at these. so i know nothing. If this is correct then i have not allowed anything like enough room.

It's total length of all the vines Not just the main. Its more of an estimation. If you get a nice female at 125 ft pollinate it. There will be others.

Keep good records so you can compare the size of melons on the same plant on a specific day after pollination.

Dont always listen to all the given numbers,keep an open mind when growing.I grew the 260.5 in a PH of 8 season ended with a 7.5.They told me I was in trouble.I started the 260 on this plant a couple days after this photo here on my Diary.Dont be pinching melons off a small plant over 75 sg feet.You need the early start.http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=160347
