Hi watermelon people,
I have finally gotten a few sets on my watermelon plant that is about 300 square feet. One set is growing well and was about 40 inches ott on day 10 which was yesterday. I also have 3 more sets on other side of plant at day 6.

2 questions that I have:

Is a 300 square foot plant large enough to support 2 melons?

And if the answer is yes which is the preferred baby to keep, one that is longer than the rest, or one that is fatter than the rest?

Not expecting much as I am in Northern Vermont but it sure is a nice distraction seeing the pumpkins are struggling.

300 ft can grow 2. I fear you'll always wonder "what if I only grew 1". If you decide to keep just 1, just measure the younger ones at day 10 and keep the melon with the largest 10 day ott if the shape is ok. Another thing to consider this late in the season is the 4 days weight gain that the older one will have.

i agree with brotherdave. as long as the melons are on different vines, you can grow more then 1 big melon. BUT its just like the pumpkins, only 1 for the biggest .

If you want to go for the largest possible like for the Vermont state record watermelon, always go with one per plant. A 300 square foot plant should produce a very nice fruit.

Thanks for the words of advice everyone. Especially you Frank! LOL As it is my first year trying a melon here I am excited that I finally got pollinations albeit late. I have decided to just go with the older one and attempt to get a large one.
