but at the same watermelon roots can go down as far as a foot and 1/2 or better.

Atlantic Giant pumpkin roots are by far the most aggressive of any cucurbit that I have seen. But like tallcorn says melon roots are pretty impressive in their own way. I would say they can stand the heat and drier conditions better than the Atlantic Giant.
