This past year I had kind of a hard time with getting watermelon seeds to germinate they were tendergold, tendersweet and mountain sweet yellow. I started them in a starting soil in peat pots indoors, should I expect the same problems with the Carolina cross? I have heard that others have different methods for starting seeds such as, rolling a seed in a damp papertowel wrapped in foil on top of the fridge. Does anyone else use other methods or should I stick with the peat pots. My other seeds took off great, cantaloupe and cucumbers.

Main thing is Consistent Temp and Moisture level -- watermelons seem to prefer a higher temp ( 80 - 90 F) soil temp for germination and moist but not soaked (too much water and the seedling will rot instead of grow) soil

I would suggest more in the 95 - 98 degree range with limited moisture. I use a incubator for temp control.

Yep, get an egg incubator. I set mine in the range TD mentioned also... Where you at in Indiana chill?
