Newbie to growing gaint pumpkins & watermelons. This was my first year. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share some great genetics. A friend gave me a couple plants this past spring and I am hooked. My first watermelon was 201 and pumpkin was 574.8. Would like to try some different genetics because my melon was an air melon. Any tips on growing or preventing the void inside would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Think the key is calcium & heavy water when melon is under thirty days old.Bill Edwards has it figured out all his melons are tall round melons, that almost look ceramic. They weigh really heavy(no air).If you can get Bill to reveal his secret you will know for sure.I think it's calcium not sure though.I'm still growing air bubbles.lol

pumpkin12, if you are not a member of Giant Watermelon Growers, think about joining. This years seed pack will have some great seeds in it (by looking at the top 20 melons).

The 326 Bartoli was almost round. I bet it was a solid melon. It was 225" OTT and went 4% heavy.

I will be joining the giant watermelon growers for next year (for the seeds) are there other benefits to it besides the seeds? Such as good forums and such.

There is a yearly letter to all members in which the top growers tell their story of how they grew their big melons. And there are some great cash prizes. Have you been to our web site ? Here is the link :

When I order stuff from Extremepumpkin.com I recieve a 10% discount because I'm a member. That alone makes it worth the cost to join. Looking forward to 2013.

I dont think the air is genectics at all.it's what were feeding them & water.

I'm going to do some research this winter at the hydro store. When I figure out what nutrients make a solid rock melon I will share in on here.

I think we need Mr Bartoli sharing with us how he raised a 326 pound world record melon. When they get that huge it doesn't really matter if they have a little air in them.
