By mid summer my vines own my garden, and by then, I am ready for them to take it.

I do not trim my vines, but once you have your melon set, you probably can. I do not know what that does towards growing a champion, but pumpkin growers will train and prune theirs.

I grow in a small area. Each plant is allowed a 10x15 space on my big sheet of landscape fabric. I use BBQ skewers from the store to keep the side vines towards the center of the plant and to hold vines back from my walk areas. When a vine reaches the end of its 10x15 ft area..I pick the vine up and throw it into the middle of the plant and let it grow back the other way.I don't trim any vines. By the end of the season, I have a pretty thick wad of vines.

I'm growing entirely in a hoop house this year. I'm trying to guide the vines to cover the space 100% in leaves plus one pumpkin. When the vines hit the end of my hoop house I will cut off the growth tip. I don't expect a monster but would love a 200lb watermelon.

I trim vines when they hit the border areas.I also will trim plant throughout the season. If the bottom leaves get buried with several layers of leafs I dont think they can be productive. The bottom ones should be rooted to soil,They should get sunlight. Also toward mid September I found brown slimy vines where I did let them get buried.I will try to keep them trimmed this year.
