Pumpin growers have the Howard Dill award for the prettiest pumpkin at each weigh-off. So I have been thinking why don't we consider one overall "Lloyd Bright" award. Let all of the growers who want consideration send in their best picture of a melon they entered in a weigh-off and let the committee choose the one they like best. The problem is I don't have the money to fund this. But I do think it is worth considering. Perhaps it could be funded out of the general funds or someone may step up and make a donation for the first year's award.Everyone please let me know what you think. Some may think if you have seen one melon you have seen them all but the same could be said about pumpkins. I think the committee would look for the best color and overall shape and perhaps size would also be a factor if there are lots of near perfect looking melons.

I agree that some melons are just beautiful with dark green color and good proportions while others are just big melons.

It sounds like a simple award and nice recognition for the extra dedication. Even if there is no award or prize money it still would be a nice honor to have.

That is difficult to argue with Nate. Perhaps something along the lines of some seeds from the top growers would be appropriate. That would not cost much more than postage and I am sure it would be much appreciated. And a ribbon shouldn't cost much and so is doable if our fund has a few bucks to spare. Our committee has done a lot in a short period of time and I for one am very happy with the direction we are headed and what has already been accomplished.I feel like the more recognition we are able to hand out the happier our membership will be as a whole.

Sounds fun... the competition is always good... Seeds are a good idea... Might be hard to judge by pictures though. Thanks for the hard work guys.

Another thought on a nice but inexpensive prize is a signed copy of Lloyd's book on growing giant watermelons.
