How long can you keep a watermelon in a one gallon pot without stunting the plant?

I grow mine in a "2" gallon nursery pot. (probably actually holds a gallon of soil) I get about 11/2-2 months. It seems melon growers are a bit less concerned with plants getting potbound than Atlantic giant growers. The roots of melons are a lot less vigorous if you compare them to Ag's.

A lot depends on how fast the plant is growing. Do you have a problem with putting them in larger pots ? If not why not go ahead and do it ? If you have the pots and the room it can only help your roots.
